What you're seeing
A community of people with varying beliefs, shown on a spectrum from left (blue) to right (red). Gray dots in the middle are moderates. Watch as echo chambers and outrage gradually pull people toward the extremes.
How to read the graph
Dot color shows belief strength — deep blue or deep red means extreme, gray means moderate. The histogram at the bottom shows the distribution of beliefs. The mini chart tracks the gap between groups and how many moderates remain.
The key lesson
Polarization isn't just about people choosing sides — it's structurally produced by two forces: echo chambers (we cluster with the like-minded) and outrage amplification (exposure to the 'other side' pushes us further into our own). Cross-group contact is the only force that counteracts both.
